Title: Cancer Survivors Day    Show All Click to Zoom
Date Posted: July 23, 2008
Description: National Cancer Survivors Day is June 1st

Cancer survivors are people who have been diagnosed with cancer and those in their lives who are affected by the diagnosis, including family members, friends and caregivers.  In America alone, there are almost 10.8 million people living with a history of cancer.  The overall 5-year survival rate for adults diagnosed with cancer in 1996-2003 is 66%.  These cancer survivors will be the first to tell you that you can lead a fulfilling life after a cancer diagnosis.

A cancer diagnosis can cause a host of problems – including physical, financial and emotional hardships which often persist even after the treatment has finished.  Survivors may face many challenges including access to cancer specialists and promising new treatments, denial of health and life insurance coverage, employment problems, psychological struggles,  the strain on personal relationships and also the intense fear of recurrence.

Just as cancer treatment varies for each person, many different coping strategies are used.  Some ideas to try might include:

  • Share your feelings honestly with your family, friends, spiritual adviser or counselor.
  • Keep a journal to help organize your thoughts.
  • Weigh the pros and cons when faced with a difficult decision.
  • Find a source of spiritual support.
  • Set aside time to be alone.
  • Remain involved with work and leisure activities as much as possible.

National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual, worldwide Celebration of Life in more than 700 communities throughout the United States and around the world.  Participants unite in a symbolic event to show the world that a high-quality life after a cancer diagnosis can be a reality.  To improve the quality of life of cancer survivors, more resources, research and legislation is needed.  The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation encourages a greater commitment to resolving the issues of cancer survivorship through public education.

Knowledge, hope and inspiration can help beat cancer.
