Title: CHILDREN'S ROTAVIRUS    Show All Click to Zoom
Date Posted: March 23, 2009
Description: Children's Rotavirus Vaccine is a Success!

Since the new vaccine for the disease that can cause deadly diarrhea in infants was introduced two years ago, there has been a remarkable decrease in hospitalizations and ER visits for rotavirus.  There is even evidence the vaccine reduces the spread of the disease to children who are not immunized.  Prior to the introduction of the vaccine, rotavirus took a toll in the industrialized and developing nations.  Some of the statistics cited include:

  • No. 1 cause of diarrhea-related hospitalizations and deaths in infants and children
  • More than 400,000 physician visits, 200,000 ER visits, up to 70,000 hospital admissions and 60 deaths annually in the US
  • Causes 2 million hospitalizations worldwide every year
  • Blamed for nearly ˝ million deaths of children under the age of 5 annually

Since the vaccines, RotaTeq and RotaRix, are oral vaccines, you don’t have to worry about another shot.  The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends the rotavirus vaccine be given at your infant’s 2 month, 4 month and possibly 6 month well child visit to your pediatrician and it is now a part of the childhood immunization schedule.

“In the U.S., rotavirus infection outbreaks are most common during winter and spring months.  It is a problem particularly in childcare centers and hospitals because it is very contagious, “ states Jennifer Marburger, PNP, in Dr. Penni Cambre’s office at WTMA.  The virus passes the stool and the children are always touching something that has been contaminated.  Usually this happens when kids don’t wash their hands often enough, especially before eating and after using the toilet.

If you have any questions or concerns about this vaccine, please call your healthcare provider.  You may contact Dr. Cambre’s office at 325-224-5141.
